Hampshire respond well against SLC Development XI

Hampshire were trailing by 29 runs in response to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Development XI at stumps on the second day of their four-day match, being played at Southampton yesterday. Resuming on their overnight score of 4-1, Hampshire went on to add 248 more runs to their first innings total, losing four more wickets, in reply to SLC Development XI’s first innings total of 281 runs.

Toby Albert and Ross Whiteley remained unbeaten on 69 and 55 respectively, while adding an unbroken stand of 98 runs for the sixth wicket, after Hampshire were down at 154-5. Albert was on a marathon knock, facing 232 deliveries to remain not out on 69, while hitting four boundaries. Whiteley’s 55 not out came in 114 deliveries and had six boundaries and a six.

Earlier, opener Fletcha Middleton made 64 off 126 deliveries, inclusive of eight fours and a six, after losing his partner John Turner before scoring on the fourth delivery of their innings on the first day before stumps were drawn. SLC Development XI used eight bowlers, but Dhananjaya Lakshan and Udith Madushan stood out picking two scalps apiece, while Dilum Sudeera claimed a wicket.

Electing to bat, SLC Development XI posted 281 runs before being bowled out. Allrounder Santhush Gunathilake top scored for the visitors with a 93-ball 53, which had seven boundaries, after Nuwanidu Fernando made 52 off 114 deliveries inclusive of eight fours. Rising star and allrounder Dunith Wellalage made 44 off 82 deliveries, hitting six fours on the way.

Right-arm paceman John Turner, also opening the Hampshire bowling attack, picked five wickets conceding just 31 runs in 16 overs. Harry Petrie picked three scalps, while Dominic Kelly claimed two victims. Today is the third day of the four-day game.
