Assistant teachers in a fix due to error in appointment letters
View(s):Twenty assistant teachers who got their teacher appointments last week are in a dilemma as their letters of appointments bare the wrong workplace.
It was learned that the letters were addressed to the previous schools that they worked at.
On inquiry it was discovered these teachers had been transferred to other schools some years ago but the provincial education department had failed to update the transfers and had posted the letters to the previous schools they worked at.
Accordingly they were expected to travel to the old school and sign in before they travelled to the appointed school for work, a representative of the Ceylon Teachers Union said.
Failure to report to the old school would result in these teachers not getting the salary granted to grade (iii) teachers. Assistant teachers were paid an allowance of Rs. 10,000 a month.
Nuwara Eliya District Secretary V. Indraselvan said this had created severe inconveniences to these teachers who had to report to work on time.
Also the lack of public transport due to the fuel shortage in the country was exacerbating the problem.
The Central provincial education department had requested for a period of two weeks to make amendments to the letters.
Last week 357 teacher assistants in the Central province got their letters of appointments absorbing them to the mainstream teacher cadre. -CC
