The 13-year mandatory education policy has saved thousands of students who were vulnerable to drop out from the education system.

According to the Central Bank’s 2021 annual report issued recently, 9,603 students enrolled under the vocational stream for Advanced Level studies last year.

“Roughly 87 per cent were identified as vulnerable to dropping out from the education system, in the absence of this option,” the report said.

More than 500 schools countrywide are currently offering the vocational stream for A/L’s. Last year, around 11,000 students who were undertaking studies in this stream were directed to institutional training.

“Further, 6,390 students who were enrolled under this stream in previous years completed Level 04 of the National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) and were absorbed across several industries such as tourism and hospitality, automobile/electrical services, caregiving/sports, IT, construction and agriculture and plantation among others,” the Central Bank report said.

The Education Ministry is planning to extend this programme to another 78 schools this year.

The report also said the programme to introduce the ‘Technology’ stream as a fifth stream at A/L’s continued to progress last year, with nine more schools being added to this  programme. This resulted in 466 schools providing the technology stream by the end of last year.
