Glitch in Indian fertiliser imports

Sri Lanka has been awaiting a 65,000 metric tonnes (MT) fertiliser shipment from India under the Indian credit line but this has now run into some concerns in India.

Indian official sources speaking with the Business Times indicated that “both the sides (India and Sri Lanka) are working towards taking the discussion on fertiliser imports to an early conclusion.”

The Indian government had, according to a statement issued on May 12 by the Sri Lankan High Commission in India, assured Sri Lanka of an “immediate” export of urea fertilizer amounting to 65, 000 MT.

However, this has now hit a snag as it is learnt that this assurance has been made at a time when India has already banned the export of fertiliser.

This is now facing some procedural processes which India is currently trying to sort out.
