Aid from Vidudeya J/pura 60’s Friends Organisation for Wewegama Maha Vidyalaya
View(s):The Vidudeya J/pura 60’s Friends Organisation initiated a campaign to donate books and musical instruments worth around Rs. 300,000 to the students of Wewegama Maha Vidyalaya in the Uvaparanagama area recently.
Wewegama Maha Vidyalaya is located in the village of Ambagahawatta in the Uvaparanagama area, near the Badulla and Nuwara Eliya district boundary. This school which began as a mere building with a thatched roof in the early fifties, today consists of several buildings, with a student body of around 600 students studying in the arts, commerce and IT streams.
Hundreds of them being graduated from the school had entered universities, held senior government positions and some even gainfully employed overseas and many others being engaged in various jobs.
Due to the arid climate of the area, the people living in this area make a living through paddy and chena cultivation.
As such many villagers face many hardships due to a difficult economic crisis causing difficulties in making their ends meet. With the intention of expanding the subject knowledge of the schools’ children, the Vidudeya 60’s Friends Organisation donated books, musical instruments and a bundle of library books.
The staff and students including the principal H.M.M.P Herath had taken steps to welcome the relatives who had come to their aid, who had travelled a long way from Colombo. Accordingly, the President of the Vidudeya J/Pura Friendship Organisation, the former Local Government, Education and Health Ministry Secretary and former Sports Director Milton Amarasinghe and the Friends of Vidudeya International Organiser Mapa Rajapaksa–an alumnus of Wewegama Vidyalaya–and all invitees were warmly welcomed by the teaching staff.
Milton Amarasinghe hoisted the national flag at the welcoming ceremony, whereas Mapa Rajapaksa, who coordinated the event, hoisted the Uva Provincial flag and the school principal H.M.M.P hoisted the school flag. Dance performances by the students, as well as a performance by the school band were a part of the ceremony.
Mr. Amarasinghe said the Vidudeya J/Pura Friends’ Organisation has been selecting schools with poor students and schools in remote villages from different parts of the country, for their various projects.
He said Siri Ranasinghe, the Chief Patron and Editorial Director of our organisation and the Editor-in-Chief of Lankadeepa, requested that steps be taken to revive the respective CSR. Accordingly, Mapa Rajapaksa, also asked for support in solving the problems of the respective school.
Milton Amarasinghe added that such programmes will continue to be launched in the hope that their projects will bring relief to the community and comfort to school children and their parents.
