Bona Ekamai Wadey
It seemed the baila baton left behind by the legend Sunil Perera was idling and no one was interested in pick the baton up.
The world of baila in Sri Lanka has come to somewhat standstill after the demise of Sunil Perera, Desmond de Silva and Ronnie ‘thattaya’ Leitch.
After eight months of the decease of Sunil Perera, finally the baton was picked up and now the race continued.
The young baila singer Nisal Katipearachchi released his new song ‘Bona Ekamai Wadey’ ‘ ’ keeping Sunil Perera’ rhythm continued with the young generation.
‘Baila is my genre. I am a huge fan of Sunil Perera from my younger days and he was my inspiration. But I definitely can’t step in to his shoes. I am just nobody, when compare with uncle Sunil. But I am determined to continued his style’ said Nisal Katipearachchi, who is gaining popularity with his new song ‘Bona Ekamai Wadey’.
Marine Engineer by profession Nisal took to music when he was at school at the D S Senanayaka College, Colombo. Starting off his career as a marine engineer who used to sail, Nisal has been in the engineering sector for a while. But the theatre and bandstand seemed to be a familiar place for Nisal as he worked with popular ‘Freddy’ and ‘Puswedilla’ theatrical comedy series since 2018.
‘That was my first stage appearance. I have been involved in drama while at school but haven’t acted before. It was during O/Ls I got to know Feroze when I was in the backstage crew in one of his plays. After coming to Colombo I got involved in Fun Home after a long time. I was in the crew when Freddy came alive in Colombo. It was a sudden decision. I came in for auditions but never thought I will get selected. I really enjoyed the theatre, but my love was with music. But theatre gave my confidence to interact with the public’ Nisal said.
His popular song ‘Bona Ekamai Wadey’ was his brainchild and he took the lead in crafting the audio version and the visual.
‘I was supported by my friends and family members. I have never got any service of a production house. Entire storyline was created by me and my buddies backed me in creating this song and the visual for YouTube’ he added.
Script, lyrics, vocals of the song is by Nisal Katipearachchi, while music composition, mixing and mastering was done by Dushan Jayathilake of Gypsies at ‘Dush Studio’.
Visual Director was Dimon John and Cinematography (DOP) was by Majith S. Uyangoda.
The cast of the storyline includes Manoj Duke, Lakmi Jayathilake, Shanya Rathnayaka, Dehara Katipearachchi, Nimshi Katipearachchi, Yasas Rathnayaka, Shivantha beddewela, Nirmal Bandara, Dowaan Harley, Rehan Ariyarathne, Mandy De Silva, Ian De silva, Chavith Gamage, Fareeda Yusuf, Navanthi Rajakaruna, Dushani Mathew, Nisal Attanayaka, Charith Dissanayaka, Ruwanthi, Kosal ‘Kosi’ Wickramanayake and Shino Adhan.
Nisal has penned some twenty odd songs and he is planning to release accordingly.
‘My next song would be a tribute song for uncle Sunil. I name d it as ‘Baila loke peralikaraya’. This will be released in September in commemorating with his first year death anniversary’ said Nisal.
‘All songs I have written are baila songs and I am keen to find a sponsor for the production side. ‘Bona Ekamai Wadey’ was done all by me and I was financially supported by my family and friends. It is not possible to do it on your own. I am grateful, if any possible corporate or personal help after seeing my first song ‘Bona Ekamai Wadey’ ‘’ Nisal explained.
