Glyphosate ban to be reversed?
Agriculture sector authorities are currently working on reversing a ban on Glyphosate following a request from the Plantation Ministry.
Agriculture Department Director General Dr. Ajantha De Silva said that they have already submitted a technical paper to a Parliamentary sub-committee in a bid to commence the process of reversing a ban on the much needed weedicide Glyphosate.
It was pointed out that there is a “big request from the Plantation Ministry seeking approval for tea and coconut” and as a result the matter has been taken up by the Agriculture Minister and the professionals involved in this subject.
Dr. De Silva noted that the Agriculture Department was asked to submit a technical paper from the Pesticide Technical Advisory Committee and this report was sent to the Ministry.
It was pointed out that the recommendations in this technical paper had pointed out the environmental aspects related to the use of Glyphosate and that it was not harmful in the use of the product on the plantations.
The plantations require the weedicide Glyphosate in a bid to remain competitive and ensure that they can retain their markets that insist on zero residue levels.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that the Public Services Commission has been sent a recommendation from the Agriculture Ministry Secretary concerning the suspension of the Registrar of Pesticides J.A. Ranjith following which it is likely that he will be reinstated.
