Laugfs gas, the duopoly partner in the nation’s cooking gas supply, announced yesterday it would resume supplies today. Its Chief Executive Officer W. H. K. Wegapitiya said a gas shipment of 3500 MT was scheduled to arrive yesterday and urgent arrangements would be made to supply customers who have been waiting months for gas.

The company had not supplied gas for months mainly because of the US dollar shortage, while its competitor Litro struggled to supply the growing daily demand.

Disgruntled customers had almost given up on the company with many demanding their deposits on the cylinders. Laugfs Gas assured its customers that hence forth gas would be supplied without interruption.

Mr Wegapitiya said the company’s talks with the Central Bank had been fruitful and he was promised a steady flow of US dollars for imports.

“The Central Bank governor is understanding and knows that gas supply is an essential service,” he said.

The shipment received yesterday would ease the burden on the main supplier, Litro Gas. Laugfs Gas has a share of 30% of the customer base. For the people it was good news that Laugfs Gas would resume supplies today. Most households in Colombo had invested in two gas cylinders, one from each company.

“The opportunity to use either would be a blessing,” one housewife said pulling out the discarded yellow cylinder from the storage room.

Meanwhile, Litro which had been supplying gas continuously for the past three days announced yesterday it would not be supplying gas yesterday and today. On Friday the company which said it had finished its stock and supplied only 16,000 cylinders, which were distributed to customers in Colombo. People who lined up to receive gas in Mattakuliya went berserk when cylinders were handed out of turn, despite the people waiting a long time from early dawn.

At Kirulapana, to buy gas, the people had to produce their utility bills as proof of residence in the area. Litro had announced that a gas shipment of 2500 MT was due to arrive today.

However people continued to queue up despite the pouring rain in the hope of getting a cylinder of gas. Long queues were seen in Badulla, Batticaloa, Kalutara and Baddegama, with some complaining they had not received cooking gas for months.
