Sumanthiran’s security officer found dead in Wellawatte; Army and Police investigations underway
The Army and the Police are carrying out separate inquiries into the death of a soldier assigned to provide security to Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarian M. A. Sumanthiran, after his body was found with gun shot injuries in Wellawatte yesterday morning.
The soldier’s body was found in a residence, six houses away from the MP’s residence at Daya Road in Wellawatte. Mr. Sumanthiran told the Sunday Times that he was away in Jaffna when the incident occurred.
However, he said he had turned away the Army security personnel assigned to him and had informed a senior officer that the Police security provided to him was enough.
The soldier was 22 years old, and was from Walapane.
Army spokesman Nilantha Premaratna said they were conducting an inquiry into the incident. He said after the May 9 incidents security to MPs had been increased, and accordingly six guards had been provided for each MP.
The body was removed to the Kalubowila hospital yesterday and was awaiting postmortem. The Police said investigations were underway into the incident.
