Egyptian Ambassador agrees to renew Orabi Pasha Memorial prize
View(s):Egyptian Ambassador Maged Mosleh agreed to renew the Orabi Pasha Memorial prize which was presented at the Kingswood College prize giving years ago.
It was pointed out to the Ambassador that the prize was awarded in the memory of Ahmed ʻUrabi or Orabi Pasha, whose sons were educated at Kingswood College during the time he and his family were in exile in Sri Lanka. Pasha and his family were exiled to Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) by the British, after he lead the “Urabi revolt” in Egypt. Kingswood College founder, Edmund Blaze, was the principal of the school at that time.
Ambassador Mosleh visited Kingswood over the weekend and met the Kingswood College Old Boys Union President Tissa Wijeyaratne, along with the Vice President and the Secretary. The meeting was presided by Kingswood College Principal Upali Chandrakumar.
The Ambassador said the school could decide on which subject or area the memorial prize should be awarded to the students.
