Recruitment of graduate teachers put on hold
The recruitment of 22,000 graduates for the teaching service has been put on hold pending Cabinet approval in view of a recent Government decision to suspend recruitment to the public sector.
The Education Ministry will shortly seek approval to go ahead with the recruitment programme, and will also ask the Government if it will release funds to pay increased salaries. The Ministry will be seeking approval to pay the graduate teachers an additional sum of Rs. 7000.
The move comes as interviews were still underway to recruit the teachers for G.C.E A/L classes. The interviews were expected to continue until next month.
According to Education Ministry sources some 35,000 graduates applied for the posts. They had graduated in 2018, 2019 and 2020, and all of them were required to be under the age of 35 years to apply.
The Education Ministry expected to make a case for the recruitment of graduate teachers to fill the existing vacancies.
In a related development, the Education Ministry would also seek Cabinet approval for the recruitment of 7000 to 8000 nonacademic staff to schools. The staff was required to fill in vacancies in schools, which had been managing with minimal staff in the last few years.
