Low key state Poson festival in Mihintale
The state Poson festival in Mihintale will be held on a low key while religious programmes have been organised countrywide to mark Poson day on Tuesday.
Buddhist Affairs Commissioner General Sunanda Kariyapperuma told the Sunday Times that although a decision was made to go ahead with the state festival, it will be done with minimal expenditure.
The main celebration at Mihintale Raja Maha Vihara would focus more on religious activities with the participation of the Chief Prelates of the three sects.

The prevailing economic crisis has put a damper on this year’s celebrations with less pandals and other decorations expected as was the case with Vesak celebrations last month. The high cost of living and fuel crisis will see less number of dansal too across the country.
The Easter Sunday attacks in 2019 followed by the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in low key state celebrations of Vesak and Poson for the past three years.
Anuradhapura District Secretary Janaka Jayasuriya said the chanting of pirith and Bakthi gee recitals would be held in the district.
The annual Aloka Pujawa in Mihintale will be held from June 14 to 16 while the annual Aloka Pujawa at Thanthirimale Raja Maha Vihara will be carried out by the Wijeya Newspapers group for the 19th consecutive year.
