Inverters: Beating the power crisis
More and more Sri Lankans are opting for substitutes to power their electricity requirements in the wake of a crippling power crisis.
Solar panels, net metering, and generators have now taken a back seat due to a more cost-effective option which is inverters.
Nabeel Nular, Proprietor Lunar Engineers told the Business Times that inverters save about 60 per cent power compared with other options such as generators. He said that a 1 kilowatt generator consumes about 3 litres of petrol. The generator also has a running cost which adds to the overall cost structure.
Mr. Nular added that his company has installed more than 30 inverters in Colombo during the past month. The business has increased by 100 per cent, he added.
Rohan Jayasuriya, Head of Operations European Solar Technologies, told the Business Times that his company started marketing the inverters last November after predicting the power crisis. “Now we have 1300 customers in the western province only. We did 150 installations last month.” He said that monthly the sales are increasing and around 90 per cent of their customers are households. He added that with a 1 kilowatt system a television, two fans, and 10 bulbs can be operated for about five to six hours. “This is a basic system.”
He said so many requirements are pouring in every day due to the power crisis. “Especially before the ordinary level examinations, there were many requirements. Also, for software engineers and those working with computers we have done many installations.”
