Limited schools days may become a reality
View(s):Education authorities are currently discussing the possibility of limiting school days, given the crisis situation and proposals have been submitted to the ministry by the Ceylon Teachers Service Union (CTSU), the Sunday Times learns.
A series of proposals pertaining to limiting school days have been discussed with the Education Minister but there is no reaction yet, CTSU Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe said.
He said proposals have been submitted with regard to extending the school time per day and to reduce the number of days.
“We had two rounds of meetings last week with the minister to discuss these issues.O/L paper making has started and it is also in a crisis situation right now. It is impossible to go to school with the prevailing fuel shortage,” he said.
Mr. Jayasinghe also said school van fares have skyrocketed, so a fuel subsidy should be provided.
“We have also demanded to increase the number of ‘Sisu Sariya’ buses and to regulate the school vans,” he said.
He claimed that the fuel issue had a direct impact on students because many did not have access to transportation.
Meanwhile, due to transportation issues, the Education Ministry declared a special school holiday for Government and Government approved private schools on Friday.
