Two wheels now only option for workers
View(s):Cycling to work is now being explored by state and private sector companies to ride out the economic calamity.
Bus and rail transport has collapsed and there is no hard currency for the rulers to buy petrol and diesel. The last oil shipment under an Indian credit line arrived on Friday.
Some companies are now allowing flexible work hours for those who ride to work.
Some workers have asked employers to assign them to branch offices closer to their homes.
The national coordinator (training) accident and orthopaedic service, Ms Pushpa R Zoysa said that she, too, is cycling short distances.
She said riding is one of the best ways with which to face the economic calamity and it also is good for physical and mental health.
“If people ride, they can save time, money, and gain health benefits such as reduction of cardiovascular diseases as well as diabetes.’’
Ms Zoysa who is also the head nurse at the National Hospital’s accident service also said people must take safety measures because there are no cycling lanes.
Sampath Bank is encouraging employees to ride to work and an initiative was launched at Diyatha Uyana on Thursday. Managing Director, Nanda Fernando said it is the “first of many initiatives’’.
Group Chief Human Resource Officer, Lalith Weragoda said it is “easier to get from one place to another on a bicycle’’.
