Sri Lanka win six medals at Western Asian Youth Chess Championships
View(s):Vinuda Shenal Gunathilake of Royal College, Desandi Dhihansa Gamage of Sirimavo Bandaranayake Balika Vidyalaya and young Hasadi Sethumsa of Sujatha Vidyalaya, Matara won silver medals at the Western Asian Youth Chess Championships 2022.
Vinuda claimed his silver medal in the Under-14 Open while Desandi and Hasadi won their medals in the Under-16 Girls and Under-8 Girls events respectively at the event that was held in Maldives. Desandi scored 5 points out of 7 games while Vinuda tied for the top spot to claim the silver medal on tiebreaking points. Hasadi scored 5½ points out of 7 games in the Under-8 Girls category.
Susal de Silva of Nalanda Vidyalaya, S.D.B.K. Seneviratne of Maliyadeva College and Dulinma Rathnayake of Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya, Kiribathgoda won bronze medals in the Under-18 Open, Under-16 Open and Under-12 Girls respectively. Susal scored 5 points out of 7 games while Seneviratne scored 4½ points out of 7 games. Dulinma finished with 5 points out of 7 games to earn the third position.
The Western Asian Chess Championships 2022 was organised by the Maldivian Chess Federation under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation and FIDE. The Rapid event took place on June 16 at the Ukulhas in Maldives. The event was played with the time control of 10 minutes and an addition of 10 seconds on the Swiss System in seven rounds.
The West Asian Chess Championships 2022 will start on June 17 and will run until June 22 at the same venue, the Convention Centre of Ukulhas in Maldives. A total of 22 players are expected to take part at the event.
