Principals and teachers submit proposals for four day week
View(s):Principals and teachers have submitted a proposal to the Education Ministry so they could follow the four day week system introduced to the public sector, but the Education Ministry is yet to decide on this scheme.
One of the proposals was for teachers to continue to work without using the relief period and obtain the Friday’s day off option. The other proposal was for teachers to continue to work until 3.30 p. m. daily so the extra work hours on the weekdays can help to cover the syllabuses, and Friday would be an off-day for them.
However, teachers and principals have demanded that lunch should be provided by the government if they are to work for longer hours.
The Education ministry is yet to take a decision on the proposals and has postponed its decision until next week.
“We will have to take a final decision by next week,” a senior Education Ministry official said.
The Education Ministry calculations showed that students in the Western province had lost 247 days of education due to the COVID-19 situation in the past two years, while in the outstation areas it was 163 days.
“The literacy of children has suffered a setback due to this,” the senior official said.
Meanwhile the Education Ministry is thinking of maintaining classes for at least three days each week, instead of closing schools for the whole week.
