University of Peradeniya closes; academic activities put on hold
View(s):There are 13,400 undergraduates registered at the University of Peradeniya; 7600 students stay in the university’s hostels and nearly 3500 students attend classes from home or are boarded in the vicinity said University of Peradeniya spokesperson Prof. Terrence Madujith.
The university cannot provide the students with food and other facilities due to the economic crisis and the shortage of cooking gas, fuel and other commodities. Therefore the university administration had decided to clear the university premises on June 18, including the hostels. The exams and teaching facilities have also been suspended, Prof. Madujith added.
When the current situation eases the administration would take immediate measures to open the University, Prof. Madujith said.
However, undergraduates of the university who belong to the Peradeniya Students Union held a protest at Galaha Junction against the closure of the University of Peradeniya on the orders of Vice Chancellor M. D. Lamawansa. The protest took place as the undergraduates were asked to leave the premises immediately.
Prof. M. D. Lamawansa said due to the current difficulties faced in all academic programmes including examinations the University would be temporary “discontinued” and all hostels would be closed immediately.
No date was issued as to its reopening and Prof. Lamawansa said the respective faculties would notify the undergraduates on the beginning of academic activities and examinations in the due course of time.
