An unsavoury smell

The sweet aroma of fruits is replaced by an acidic, disgusting stench at the Peliyagoda Manning Market, as traders blame authorities for tons of waste piled up at the market premises.

Athula Liyanage, a fruit vendor, said they are seeing a drop in customers mainly due to the unbearable smell generated from the garbage.

“There are about 100 tons of discarded rotting organic material that can be used for compost and sold to farmers coming here. When it rains the air is filled with an acidic smell,” he complained.

Prasad Susantha, Deputy Chairman of the Manning Market, said the UDA is paid about three million rupees for the collection of waste generated from the market.

N R Prasad, Assistant Manager of the UDA’s Manning Market office, said about 10-20 tons are collected daily and there have been slight delays in garbage collection.

“We were told that due to the fuel shortage the company is struggling to collect the waste,” he said.

However, fruit vendors charge that collection has been erratic for over two months.

Prasad Ratnaweera, Director General of the UDA, said the private company involved in garbage collection has informed them that due to the fuel crisis there have been delays in collecting garbage on time.
