Four more perish in fuel lines taking tally to 16
View(s):At least four Sri Lankans perished this week as they waited in fuel queues that stretch to unprecedented lengths, or in related incidents.
At least 16 Sri Lankans have now died in fuel queues.
The most recent death was in Jaffna town where a youth was assaulted near the filling station when he had argued with those who had jumped the queue.
He had been beaten with helmets and was admitted to Jaffna Teaching hospital where he died on Thursday.
Another youth died in Anuradhapura after his motorcycle was knocked down by a tipper truck while returning after he had filled up.
Deaths were also reported from Batagoda in Anguruwatota, Omantha, and Hingurakgoda.
Among those who died were 63-year-old tipper truck driver Weearappuli Sunil. He had died while waiting in line for seven days. Another man died in a road traffic accident at Omantha, Vavuniya. He had been on his way home after filling up.
A 34-year-old father of two died after he had filled up at a Hingurakgoda filling station. The exhausted man had drowned in a canal in which he had gone for a dip. The canal was three kilometres from the filling station.
