Test nightmare as Mishara likely to be banned for one year

Promising wicket-keeper batter Kamil Mishara faces a possible one year ban after he had pleaded guilty to breaching the player code of conduct. Mishara, 21, was expelled from the national cricket team during the series against Bangladesh in May after he had taken a ‘visitor’ to his hotel room despite warnings from the hotel authorities not to do so.

The incident had been recorded in CCTV footage. Since the cricketer has admitted the fault, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will impose a suspension with no further inquiry.

“The Ex-Co will decide on the suspension soon,” said SLC’s Secretary Mohan de Silva.

This incident comes just a year after three national cricketers breached the bio-secure bubble during Sri Lanka’s tour of England last year. Kusal Mendis, Danushka Gunathilaka and Niroshan Dickwella were immediately recalled and were handed heavy penalties and suspensions. The suspensions were later reduced on player request. Mishara had served a one year suspended sentence and a one match ban after being found drunk along with some of his under-19 team mates during the Asia Cup in 2019. Mishara made his debut against Australia at the MCG early this year during the T-20 series. He also was part of the side that toured India in February and was expected to be part of Sri Lanka’s future plans.
