Authorities unsure if schools can function five days a week
View(s):Education authorities are undecided on conducting physical classes in schools this month in view of the ongoing fuel crisis, a senior Education Ministry official said recently.
A meeting is due to be held with the Education Minister after he returns from his overseas visit. At this meeting, the dates for the reopening of schools will be reviewed.
However, given the current fuel situation the minister and his officials doubted if schools could function on all five days of the week.
“We may have to opt for a system where schools operate only three days a week”, he said.
He said conducting schools for three days a week would not be sufficient to complete the syllabuses and could force the education authorities to begin the last term next year.
Earlier this year, education authorities were faced with a similar problem as the syllabuses could not be completed and the first term of this year was made use to complete last year’s syllabuses.
Meanwhile, even though schools in the rural areas were in operation this week many students did not have transport facilities. Some of them were forced to take risky journeys on top of buses.
Reports from the provinces said attendance in schools in rural areas too were affected during the week.
Vehicles in outstation areas transporting students were also affected as no priority was given to them in issuing fuel.
