Fuel crisis brings O/L paper marking to a halt: Exams department
View(s):Lack of fuel for teachers to travel to paper marking centres across the country has resulted in the examinations department halting the paper marking process.
It is learnt that although the first tranche of paper marking has been completed, teachers are finding it difficult to purchase fuel.
Although the examinations department made arrangements for teachers engaged in the process to be given priority to obtain fuel, the permits became obsolete as fuel was not available in most filling stations.
The teachers were given letters from the examinations department to get priority in fuel queues. However teachers who went to fuel sheds had to turn back as most were closed.
The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said this may result in further delay in releasing the 2021 O/L results. The exams which were to be held in December 2021 were postponed several times and were held at the beginning of May this year.
“The fuel crisis absolutely devastated the children’s education and their future,” CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said.
“The education service has not been made an essential service,” he added.
A protest on the issue was held by education trade unions at Armour Street in Colombo 12 on Friday demanding the Government to take immediate action to solve the fuel crisis.
