Walking into a well-known private bank in Sri Lanka, a customer found himself looking for a deposit slip everywhere. When he questioned the officers at the counters, an officer informed him, “Sir we don’t have printed deposit slips anymore. You can tell the account number to which you want to deposit at the deposit counter and make the transfer.”

Further the bank informed that cash deposits above Rs. 200,000 can be done with the limited stocks of paper slips available while deposits below Rs. 200,000 have to be done over the counter without slips by verifying information in the National Identity Card.

Sri Lanka is facing a severe paper shortage but there is also a market doing paper business at an exorbitant high rate.
