Induction ceremony of the 85th president of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon Mr. N.M.S. Hettigedara
View(s):Induction ceremony of the 85th President, Mr. N.M.S. Hettigedara and the Annual Dinner of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon were held on 24th of June 2022 at the Golden Rose, Boralasgamuwa. The ceremony was graced by the Chief Guest, Dr Asela Gunawardana, Director General of Health Services and the Guest of Honor, Dr Sampath Wahala, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Accreditation Board. More than 100 distinguished invitees including council members, past presidents, members of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, and the academic and non- academic staff of the College of Chemical Sciences and Institute of Chemistry Ceylon. The distinguished gathering was welcomed by Prof Sriyanthie Deraniyagala, the outgoing President of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon. Mr. K.R Dayananda a Past President of the Institute delivered the citation of Mr. Hettigedera and proposed a toast to the new President.
Mr. N.M.S Hettigedara while addressing the gathering emphasised the important role of Chemists in achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the benefit of the Country and mentioned that, as the Chairman of the Steering Committee of IYC 2011 in which the International Year of Chemistry was celebrated in a grand way, he could initiate some positive steps to enhance the awareness of Chemistry and further the strengthening of Chemistry as a profession.
He further stated that the Institute, which is the leader in producing professional graduate chemists in Sri Lanka since its establishment in 1972, has made considerable advancement towards its contribution to the increase of the number of chemistry professionals required for the country. He presented his novel idea of establishment of the National Secretariat under the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon which will be responsible for the professional practice of Chemistry and to ensure the performance of a service related to public interest and public safety and to strengthen legal or regulatory aspects related manufacture, import and export of chemical products.
Mr. Hettigedara is a Chartered Chemist, Registered Nutritionist, Registered Dietitian, Pharmaceutical Chemist and a Senior Superintendent of Police.
