University academic activities will suffer due to fuel crisis warns UGC official
View(s):Academic activities at universities are set to suffer a severe setback as the fuel shortages are hampering the continuity of administrative activities, a senior University of Grants Commission official warned.
He said due to the fuel crisis even senior staff members have not been able to report to work.
“The failure to make arrangements to provide fuel at least to senior academics including the vice chancellors and deans of faculties is having a negative impact on the system,’ he said.
He added that even though the Government did not recognise the universities as an essential service, the university staff also played an important role in maintaining the academic activities.
Even though two universities had closed so far, other universities were able to function and academic activities were taking place at the moment, but the situation might not be the same in the next few weeks, the official said.
Already, some sections such as the data centre at the Moratuwa University were closed, he added.
“The ratings of the universities too could be affected if the situation continues,” the official warned.
