WFP to provide mid-day meal to schoolchildren from October onwards

The World Food Programme (WFP) in partnership with the Government will provide mid-day meals for around one million schoolchildren coming from poverty stricken homes.

The programme will start from October this year and will distribute nutritious food to children between the ages of five to ten years. The meals will contain iron fortified rice, oil and commodities.

In the meantime a programme to resume the distribution of Thriposha to children under five years and lactating mothers was also being planned.

China had also sent 1,009 metric tonnes of rice to be distributed to more than 7900 schools in support of the school meal programme.

The school meal programme provided to children had come to a grinding halt because of skyrocketing cost of living.

With the Government paying only Rs. 30 per head suppliers had refused to continue supplying meals to children.

UNICEF in a recent statement had said 1.7 million children in Sri Lanka were at risk of dying due to acute malnutrition.
