The fifth instalment of the ‘Despicable Me’ franchise ‘The Rise of Gru’ is now being screened in theatres around Colombo and other cities.
Produced by Illumination and distributed by Universal Pictures, it is directed by Kyle Balda and the film features Steve Carell reprising his role as Gru and Pierre Coffin as the Minions, with Taraji P. Henson, Michelle Yeoh, RZA, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lucy Lawless, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo, Russell Brand and Julie Andrews.
In the 1970s, young Gru tries to join a group of super villains called the Vicious 6 after they oust their leader — the legendary fighter Wild Knuckles. When the interview turns disastrous, Gru and his Minions go on the run with the Vicious 6 hot on their tails. Luckily, he finds an unlikely source for guidance — Wild Knuckles himself — and soon discovers that even bad guys need a little help from their friends.
The fifth instalment of the Despicable Me franchise is the East European reformed baddie Gru’s (Steve Carell) origin story. He’s a 11-year-old prankster in 1976 who throws stink bombs, glues people with a cheese gun and uses magnets to win games at the arcade with his minions, well, the Minions — Kevin, Stuart, Bob and a noob, Otto. The film also reveals how Gru and the yellow little goofballs came to become a team. In this part, the spotlight is more on the hook-nosed and tubby Gru than the Minions, though there’s enough and more of their antics to keep you giggling throughout the movie.
The film is now screened at LSC – Liberty by Scope Cinemas, CCC – Colombo City Centre, PVR-Colombo-2, Majestic Cinema-Bambalapitiya, Kandy City Centre, Savoy 3D Colombo, Savoy Premier Rajagiriya, Cinemax Ja Ela, Maxx Lite Moratuwa and Vista Lite.
