With a rapidly-ageing population in Sri Lanka, the Oration 2022 on ‘Exploring medicines use in the elderly: A personal odyssey’ to be delivered by Prof. Chandanie Wanigatunge is timely and relevant.
Preparations are now underway for the two-day ‘MSF Asia Scientific Days & ICM 2022’ scientific sessions to be held on August 3 and 4 at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. It will be a hybrid with participants not only physically present but also joining on Zoom, both locally and internationally,
At the inauguration on the evening of August 3, the Chief Guest will be the university’s Vice Chancellor Senior Professor Sudantha Liyanage,
The next day’s sessions will focus on non-communicable diseases (NCDs), climate change, trauma/rehabilitation and child health. It will also include panel discussions, symposia on an array of medicine-related topics and oral and poster research presentations.
The conference is jointly organised by Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), an international, independent medical humanitarian organisation, and the Research Committee of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The Chairperson of the Research Committee is Dr. Varuni Tennakoon and the Secretary Dr. Nilanka Perera.
“The annual conference has provided a platform for students and senior academics to share their novel research findings and innovations,” said Prof. Aloka Pathirana, Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences.
Dr. Farhat Mantoo, General Director, MSF South Asia, meanwhile, added that the collaboration with the university is focused on building meaningful partnerships. MSF is committed to ensuring that the research shared during this conference is taken forward by academic partners for broader engagement amongst researchers, scholars and students. Academic partnerships are crucial because they keep the value chain going and support MSF’s social mission to ignite the change advocated for in public health.
Scientific Days are an opportunity for younger public health professionals to share the evidence generated at field level on a common platform.
Registration for the conference is free and undergraduates, post-graduates, academics and clinicians are invited to join.
