Act responsibly, Blood Bank can’t cope with emergency

The National Blood Transfusion Service also known as the blood bank is not in a position to cope with an emergency situation involving a large number of casualties, director Dr. Lakshman Edirisinghe said, pleading with the public to avoid such an eventuality.
Stating that the institute currently maintained a stock of 9,500 units of blood, he appealed to the people to act peacefully to avert an emergency situation, in an apparent reference to recent clashes involving security forces and protesters.
He said if violence broke out, leading to a sudden rise in the demand for blood, the authorities would be able to meet the demand for blood only by compromising treatment for in-house patients.
“It is each citizen’s responsibility to behave responsibly in such circumstances,” Dr. Edirisinghe said.
He said about 1100 units of blood are used daily to treat patients suffering from thalassemia, kidney, liver, and spleen ailments.
Dr. Edirisinghe said that it was a great tragedy for the people of the country when various parties continue to act irresponsibly.
“In this time of crisis, there is a need to get everyone’s support in all sectors to run everything in a moderate and responsible manner without acting to promote their narrow goals,” he said.
