Gas deliveries get rolling, but long wait in provinces
View(s):By Chrishanthi Christopher
State-owned Litro Gas said this week that 70,000 cooking gas cylinders a day will be distributed to dealers across the country.
Litro has 42 dealers countrywide.
It is estimated that 100,000 cooking gas cylinders are needed each day.
The next shipment will carry 3,000 metric tonnes.
The government has ordered 100,000 MT of LPG at a cost of US$90 million. The World Bank has provided US$ 70 million with Litro pocketing out US$ 20 million.
Litro started distributing gas on Monday. In the first two days, it distributed 70% of the cylinders in the Colombo district and 30% to bakeries and small businesses. Gas was sold directly to consumers in parks and open spaces to avoid a rush.
Also, to discourage underhand deals, cylinders were issued to people who can produce their electricity bill. To avoid repeat purchases, the bills were stamped to indicate delivery.
Meanwhile, Sri Lankans in the provinces continued to queue up at agents and dealers.
In the Nuwara Eliya District and in Baddegama people complained they had not received gas for days.
Litro has assured that gas cylinders will be supplied to all areas.
Litro increased the price of a 12.5 kilogramme cylinder by Rs. 50. The company has asked people to avoid paying higher prices.
During the height of the gas scarcity, a gas cylinder could change hands at up to Rs.10,000.
