Officials of the North Western Province SLTB Depot said that 12 depots in the region have had to remove 150 buses due to the shortage of tyres. Accordingly, buses deployed in Puttalam, Chilaw, Wennappuwa, Kuliyapitiya, Nikaweratiya, Galgamuwa, Mahawa, Wariyapola, Kurunegala North and South, Giriulla, Narammala have had to be removed from operation.
With the current fuel crisis, the shortage of tyres has aggravated the situation of passengers facing difficulties in public transportation.
SLTB officials point out that there are 664 buses in the North Western Province Depot, and that nearly 560 buses are suitable for running.
However, North Western Province SLTB Depot officials say tyres of nearly 400 buses currently running have dangerously worn out, and there is a serious risk most of these buses will be out of service in the coming weeks. Providing tyres for SLTB buses should be done by the SLTB head office, but they have not taken steps to provide for several months, it was claimed.
North Western Province SLTB employees say they are running at a loss because they cannot operate at full capacity. The Depot is unable to pay the salaries of the bus drivers conductors.
