Petes bounce back to stun Wesley with a draw
What could have easily been a close loss, was completely overturned by St. Peter’s College, who made a brilliant comeback to draw their Dialog Schools Rugby League 2022 game 17-17 against Wesley College at Bambalapitiya yesterday. Wesley clearly had the advantage throughout the game, and went on to dominate against their opponents, who were desperate right throughout.
Wesley led the halftime 14-7, and only have themselves to blame on, as the Peterites fought back even in the final moments, obviously to steal the win from Wesley.
In the end, St. Peter’s scored from three tries and a conversion, against the two converted tries and a penalty recorded by Wesley, to even the score. What occurred was a total contrast, mainly after the turnaround. St. Peter’s were on the attack and they went on a rampage with a rolling maul, yet Wesley were too strong to beat.
Eventually St. Peter’s managed to score from the far left, and a failed conversion put them two points behind Wesley, they trailed 12-14. With time running out, St. Peter’s were given a rude shock when they were forced to move than attack, after conceding a penalty to Wesley, who did put over successfully to further expand the lead to 17-12.
In the final minute of play, St. Peter’s were still on the attack, and eventually were paid off when their entire line made a neat piece of ball work, which culminated with a brilliant try on the right flank. A failed kick still saw the game end in a stalemate of 17-all, as both teams had very little reason celebrate at the final whistle.
