Indian debut filmmaker Prasun Chatterjee’s beautiful children’s drama film ‘Dostojee’ which was awarded the Best Debut Direction award at the Jaffna International Cinema Festival 2021 has been selected to be screened at the prestigious Durban International Film Festival. This follows film winning the Best Film Award at the 24th UK Asian Film Festival in the International Competition segment in June.

Prasun Chatterjee

The slice-of-a-life drama, starring child artists Asik Shaikh and Arif Shaikh alongside Jayati Chakraborty and Swatilekha Kundu, captures the innocent friendship of two boys in a remote border village in West Bengal, separated from Bangladesh by river Padma. The thick-as-thieves friendship of the eight-year-olds Palash (Asif Shaikh) and Safikui (Arif Shaikh] transcends the barriers built by religion and society. This remote village, however, isn’t untouched by echoes of Babri Masjid demolition and the following ‘92-99 Bombay blasts. In a tragic turn of events, the two friends are parted. But do friendships end when friends leave? How do they face their first farewell? That’s what forms the crux of the film.

‘Dostojee’, after its world premiere at the 65th BFI London Film Festival has traveled so many prestigious film fests including Olympia International Film Festival (Best Young Actor Award), Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, International Film Festival of Kerala, Smile International Film Festival for Children and youth (Best Director Award, CIFEJ Prize Winner), Jaffna International Cinema Festival (Best Debut Feature Award) to name few.

Earlier it was also won the prestigious CIFEJ Prize and also the Best Director award at the International Competition section of SIFFCY 2022. The CIFEJ Prize was first created in 1981 to be given to the director of the best film participating in the professional competitive section of the prestigious international children’s film festivals. The prize is for the promotion and respect of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child supported by UNESCO.

Earlier, Arif Shaikh, who played one of two friends in ‘Dostojee’ has bagged the best young actor award in the Child’s Performance at the Olympia Film Festival that was held in Greece.
