Long queues on both sides of a road are a regular sight across the nation right now due to the fuel crisis.
Due to this, there is frequently high traffic on most roads, and the public has been inconvenienced by groups of people demanding fuel.
Even while the government was obligated to distribute fuel supplies and quell any disturbance as it dealt with the economic crisis, long lines snaked around pumping stations in Colombo and its surroundings.
Police said that since most police personel were deployed to control crowds near filling stations, they were unable to control traffic elsewhere.
A senior police officer said another issue has been that due to the issue of fuel according to the last digit of the number plate they had been faced with a number of new issues. “In case fuel ends for a particular number category, motorists refuse to leave and instead stay on, while a new queue is formed for the following day, thereby causing additional traffic in the area,” he said.
“If they do not receive fuel people are supposed to move out, but that does not take place in some sheds,” he added.
