Sri Lanka Thriposha, a state-owned company providing a nutrition supplement required by pregnant and lactating women, recently resumed production.

Thriposha distribution was disrupted from November last year due to a low yield of local maize, corn and soya beans and the soaring prices of imported corn. Maize is the core ingredient due to its high nutritional value.

Sri Lanka Thriposha Chairman Deepthi Kularathna said production had recommenced with local raw materials.

Accordingly, steps would be taken to expedite the supply of raw materials, including corn. He said if farmers were willing to provide sufficient amounts of corn he was ready to buy the corn at a price which was reasonable to the farmers.

Mr. Kularathne said they were manufacturing more than 25,000 packets of Thriposha daily and would soon be able to distribute the packets among pregnant and lactating mothers.

He said plans were underway to introduce rusk biscuits made from Thriposha.

He also said these days they were trying to get the support of agricultural services to find places where they could get top quality maize.

Around 1500 metric tonnes of maize were required each day, and annually around 20,000 to 25,000 metric tonnes were needed, Mr Kularathna added.
