Tourism industry focus on WTM, ITB
Sri Lanka’s tourism industry wants to showcase the destination at two key travel fairs but, in this respect, is faced with a foreign exchange crisis.
Following discussions by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) with the Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO) and the Tourist Hotels Association of Sri Lanka (THASL) it was decided to participate at the World Travel Mart (WTM) and the International Tourism Borse (ITB) travel fairs in London and Berlin, respectively.
SLTPB Chairman Chalaka Gajabahu told the Business Times that converting the rupees to dollars is currently the main issue they are faced with.
He noted that despite there being about five travel fairs on the calendar they have focused on travelling to only these two.
Moreover, he pointed out that they are positive in participating at these two travel fairs as they are very important.
THASL President M. Shanthikumar noted that participating at the WTM and the ITB is the key to retaining their market share and ensuring that they are able to attract travellers for the next year as well.
Meanwhile, he noted that the road shows scheduled to be held in India have been postponed and are expected to commence by mid-September.
In the meantime, the industry is awaiting the required political stability in a bid to attract more travellers and is appealing to the foreign missions in Colombo to consider lowering the travel advisories imposed on Sri Lanka.
