First term for 2023 will begin after April holidays: Ed. Ministry
View(s):Students for grade one classes also to be enrolled after April vacation
The last school term of this year has been extended until March next year, an Education Ministry official said recently.
The senior official said the decision has been taken as it was clear the syllabuses cannot be completed by the end of this year.
Accordingly the first term for 2023 would begin only after the April holidays next year.
The Ministry also decided that new entrants to grade one would be admitted to school only after April, the official said.
The Ministry had taken into consideration that schools would need to be closed for this year’s G.C.E A/L exams and for the O/L exams which would be held early next year.
The decision to delay the completion of syllabuses until next year had been taken despite the decision that schools would not be closed for this month’s usual holidays.
Currently school activities are conducted only on a limited number of days and schools were closed for several weeks in the recent months due to the political crisis and the fuel crisis.
Before that, educational activities were severely affected by the COVID-19 situation.
“We have instructed all schools to take precautions to ensure that COVID-19 does not spread in schools, as we will be forced to close schools again,” the official added.
