Lack of dollars hits rail tracks

The deteriorating conditions of the rail tracks on several lines have slowed down the speed of trains.
Railway authorities are hampered by the lack of dollars to import replacements.
Chief Engineer ( Railway lines and industries) H.M.K.W.Bandara confirmed that the condition of a number of tracks have deteriorated.
He said that on the upcountry line between Nawalapitiya to Hatton speed limits of 20 to 30 km per hour has been imposed due to this.
He said the Colombo – Matara track had deteriorated in 31 places and the upward track from Matara to Colombo at 25 locations.
The lack of sleepers also has affected the replacement work.
The department through the Transport Ministry has sought to purchase 10,000 tracks already.
