After a 16-hour operation Nuwara Eliya wildlife officers on Friday rescued a leopard after it crashed through a roof and landed in a house in the Lindula area.
The incident occured when the leopard who was giving chase to a dog fell into the house in Logie Coombwood estate.
House owner S.Suresh describing the incident said he and his family were watching television around 10 p.m. when they heard a loud noise in one of the rooms. On hearing the noise and thinking it was a landslide he had asked his family to get out of the house. But when he realised there was no threat of a landslide and went in to check he saw that a leopard had fallen into a room through the roof.
He immediately closed the room door trapping the animal inside before getting out of the house. He had then informed the wildlife officers.
However towards dawn thinking that the animal may have escaped during the night the house owner together with neighbours had opened the room when the frightened leopard had tried to attack them. Suresh and a neighbour sustained minor injuries. The neighbour was first admitted to Lindulla Hospital before being transferred Nuwara Eliya Hospital.
In an operation that lasted 16 hours Wildlife Department officers along with veterinarian Akalanka Pinideniya of the Randenigala veterinary hospital managed to sedate the animal and take it out of the house.
Wildlife officials said the 6 foot long 5-year-old male leopard was released back into the forest areas.
