Peter’s prevail over Joseph’s
St. Peter’s College captain Wanuja Kumara starred in a brilliant bat and ball show of 102 not out and two wickets, spearheading his side to regain the Rev. Fr Peter. A. Pillai Memorial Trophy beating traditional rivals St. Joseph’s College by 26 runs at the SSC grounds yesterday.
The Darley Road boys, coming into contest as the defending champions of the limited overs series, lost their opener in the opening over in the chase. However, then arrived their captain, Shevon Daniel, setting the chase into order with the opener, Sadeesha Jayawardena, scoring a valuable 61. The duo was also involved in a 147-run recovery act.
Exactly when Daniel appeared on course for a skipper’s century, the Sri Lanka Under-19 cap was out on his nervous nineties, giving a catch to his opposite number, Wanuja Kumara, who, however, hit a hundred. Daniel’s dashing 91 off only 94, had five boundaries and four sixes.
St. Joseph’s electing to field first, straightaway punished the Peterites as they were pushed into a real peril. At one point, it looked all but over staring and struggling at 61 for six. But then, their captain Kumara, along with Danal Hemananda, staged a grand recovery, reviving them from the rut they were in.
In a big rescue, they shared 174 runs for the seventh wicket, before Hemananda was the first to get separated by Muditha Lakshan, who earned his third scalp. Kumara, another national Under-19 cap, defied those and went onto hit a match-winning century.
