Korean Ambassador visits UoK; appreciates Govt.’s efforts to promote Korean language education

Korean Ambassador Santhush Woonjin Jeongrecently visited the University of Kelaniya and met with the university’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, reviving memories of his country’s ties with the university.
The Ambassador’s visit is a testament to 45 years of bilateral relations between Korea and Sri Lanka and the robust education and cultural cooperation that has continued between the two countries since 1977, an embassy official said.
The University of Kelaniya is a hub for Korean language education and has systematically educated Sri Lankan students in the Korean language. The Modern Languages Department in collaboration with the Korean Embassy has initiated diplomas and certificate courses in the Korean language for students to pursue their higher studies in the Korean language.
“Recently, many
Sri Lankans show a strong cultural affinity for Korean dramas and music which has led to an increasing demand to learn the Korean language,” Ambassador Santhush said.
“In this backdrop, Korea appreciates the Sri Lankan government for introducing Korean language education from A/L classes to undergraduate level in Sri Lanka. There are many avenues to cooperate on, especially in the areas of culture and education,” he said.
During the meeting, Prof. de Silva discussed opportunities to explore possible areas for collaboration in higher education, technology transfer and sports development, between Korea and Sri Lanka.
Currently more than 150 students study Korean language in the University of Kelaniya and show a keen interest in pursuing their higher education in Korea.
Ambassador Santhush was received by the Modern Languages Department Head Prof. Dilrukshi Ratnayaka and lecturers Ms. Chathurika Nilani, Ms. Imali Edirisooriya and Dr. Aruna Ranaweera and Senior Assistant Librarian Dr. Tharanga Ranasinghe.
After meeting the Vice Chancellor, Ambassador Santhushalso visited the Modern Languages Department and engaged with its students.
