Master of Christian Studies launched at the University of Jaffna
View(s):A new postgraduate degree programme–Master of Christian Studies–has been launched by the Graduate Studies Faculty at the University of Jaffna.
The grand launching and inauguration of the programme for the first batch took place at the faculty auditorium recently.
The university’s vice chancellor Prof. S. Srisatkunarajah was the chief guest at the ceremony. Bishop of Jaffna Rt. Rev. Dr. Justin B. Gnanapragasam, Bishop of Mannar Rt. Rev. Dr. F.L. Emmanuel Fernando, Bishop of Trincomalee Rt. Rev. Dr. Noel Emmanuel and Retired Bishop of the Church of South India Rev. Bishop Dr. S. Jebanesan were the guests of honour. The launching events were coordinated by Prof. S. Kannathasan, the faculty’s dean and a professor in parasitology.
Former vice chancellors of the university Prof. P. Balasuntharampillai and Prof. N. Shanmugalingan, and the former Department of Christian Civilization head Prof. S. Sivalingarajah also participated in the event as special guests.
Prof. S. Kannathasan in his address welcomed all those present and expressed his contentment as the faculty’s dean in inaugurating the degree programme for the first batch.
The chief guest Prof. S. Srisatkunarajah stressed the need of the programme for the transformation of contemporary society and the necessity to bring religion to the cognitive level to remove all its poignant issues.
Rev. Dr. J.C. Paul Rohan, the academic coordinator of the programme, narrated how the proposal for the new degree programme originated, was shaped and was now a reality. He also mentioned the contribution of all who worked on the project.
The student handbook for the first batch was also released by him. Mr. S. Branavan, Assistant Registrar of the Graduate Studies Faculty, proposed the vote of thanks.
The Master of Christian Studies abbreviated as ‘MChrSt’, aligned with the Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework (SLQF-2015) and met the requirements for Level 9–Masters by Course Work. It would be a self-financed academic programme.
The duration of the programme was one academic year with two semesters, and it would be conducted over twelve months with classes held on weekends. The programme would be conducted in both Tamil and English. Altogether 34 credits were allocated, consisting of 28 credits for course work and six credits for a research project.
