Aruna’s ‘Angel of the Ocean’ competes at the prestigious Moscow IFF

‘Maria-Angel of the Ocean’ Sri Lankan film directed by Aruna Jaywardana will be competing at the main competition of 44th Moscow International Festival (MIFF) which will take place from August 26 to September 2. Aruna will compete with nine films from around the world.
The festival will kick off with Alexei Megerdichev’s film ‘The Heart of Parma’ based on one of the most famous novels by the writer Alexei Ivanov. In the main competition films ‘Beheading’ directed by Sinisha Cvetich (Serbia), ‘The Voice of One Crying in the Desert’ by Cyprian Mega (Romania), ‘Journey of the Mastorna’ by Chan Ming Zhi Liao (China), ‘Hives’ by Luis Basurto (Peru) and ‘Hope’ Umit Kereken (Turkey, Germany, Slovenia) In addition, Russian paintings ‘Garden’ by Larisa Sadilova, ‘Youth’ by Dmitry Davydov and ‘Camel Arch’ by Vitaly Suslin will compete for prizes, transmits Interfax
Prizes will be awarded by a jury headed by artistic director of the Theater of Nations, theater and film actor Yevgeny Mironov.
In total, 230 films from 65 countries of the world will be shown at the MIFF this year, Ivan Kudryavtsev, Chairman of the selection committee, said at a press conference of the Organizing Committee.
One of the oldest festivals in the world, MIFF was first organized in 1935, its jury was led by Sergei Eisenstein. Since 1959, the festival began to be held regularly.
The Moscow Film Festival has been held since 1935 and has been declared an annual event since 1995. The winners of his award – “Golden George” in different years were the paintings of Federico Fellini, the Dardenne brothers and other internationally recognized masters of cinema. At the end of last year, a new team of selectors headed by Ivan Kudryavtsev began to organize it. Due to the hostilities that began in Ukraine in February, the new team had to revise the program of the review.
Dharmasena Pathiraja’s ‘Eya Den Loku Lamayek’ in 1976 and Lester James Peiris’ ‘Yuganthaya’ in 1983 competed at the MIFF, which is one of the oldest film festivals in the world. Malani Fonseka won a Diploma certificate for her acting in ‘Eya Den Loku Lamayek’ and ‘Pathiraja’s ‘BambaruEvith’ in 1978 and Prasanna Vithanage’s ‘Oba Nethuwa Oba Ekka’ in 2013 represented Sri Lanka at the festival.

Angel of the Ocean film features a group of fishermen engaged in their vocation in the mid seas they suddenly bump into a guy called Malan who had stealthily hidden in their fishing trawler with the sole intention of illegally migrating to Australia..one morning they find something mysterious floating in the seas and jointly pull it into their trawler believing that it must be a god-sent fortune. but they ultimately find it to be a sex doll. though dejected, the entry to the female sex doll causes the feelings to these men to run amok. the attitudes of the guys who had since then got on well selflessly, gradually begin to corrode.

The film stars Mahendra Perera, Priyantha Sirikumara, Hemal Ranasinghe, Darshan Dharamaraj, Ashan Dias, Suran Dissanayaka and Dasun Patirana
Graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kelaniya (Sri Lanka), Aruna carries a 20-year experience as a television producer and programmes manager under his belt. He worked with leading Sri Lanka television channels for two decades. His cinema journey began in 2009 when he co-directed the movie ‘Dancing Star’.
His feature film ‘August Drizzle’ (2011) earned him many local and international accolades. It was adjudged the best film at the Vesoul IFF in France and also clinched the NETPAC jury award, won awards for the best director and best screenplay in Sri Lanka.
