Ranjan to be pardoned after apology to judiciary
View(s):Actor-politician Ranjan Ramanayake who is serving a prison term for contempt of court is to be pardoned by President Ranil Wickremesinghe next week after he signed an affidavit apologising to the judiciary, Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe told the Sunday Times. He said all documents relating to his pardon have been finalised and measures had been taken not to give an impression that the pardon was an afront to the judiciary. The popular actor and then Gampaha District MP was sentenced to four years rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme Court on January 12 last year after being found guilty of contempt of court.
This week, a handcuffed Ramanayake was brought to the Colombo City Centre Cinema to watch his film The Game, in which he plays the lead role. The film was completed before he was sent to prison.
