Chinese students donate pocket money to Sri Lanka students
View(s):In response to an appeal from the Sri Lanka-China Society, Hangzhou Caihe No 03 primary school in Hangzhou has come forward to assist Sri Lanka students at this time of economic hardships, says Jinith de Silva, President of the Sri Lanka-China Society.
The students donated 100,000 RMB to be distributed among 200 students in Sri Lanka through a scholarship programme, he said.
“In Chinese, “Caihe” means picking lotus flowers. Hangzhou is a beautiful city famous for lotus flowers. The Hangzhou West Lake is an iconic sight in Hangzhou and is regarded as one of the most beautiful sights in China. Lotus is also a favorite flower of Sri Lanka and symbolises wisdom in Buddhism,” Mr. de Silva said.
He said the friendship between Sri Lanka and Hangzhou students started in 2020 when 89 students of that school sent in their artworks for an exhibition the Sri Lanka-China Society organised together with the Devi Balika Vidyalaya in Colombo.
In the same year Hangzhou school children organised an art exhibition for the purpose of showing their solidarity with Sri Lanka in their fight against Covid 19. They also wrote to the then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa expressing their solidarity.
“These students have happily and cheerfully come forward to help our children by donating their pocket money,” he said.
The Sri Lanka-China Society has distributed the donation among needy children, particularly those who are living in rural areas. Each student received Rs 25,000 (RMB 500/).
A ceremony was held by Sri Lanka China Society at the Devi Balika Vidyalaya. China’s ambassador Qi Zhenhong was the Chief Guest.
