Differently-abled girl obtains 3As at A/Ls after writing with her left foot

Rashmi Nimesha Gunawardena of Eheliyagoda National School passed her A/L’s with flying colours, securing 156th place in the Ratnapura district after writing her exam papers with her left foot.
Rashmi Nimesha was born with no arms and uses an artificial foot on her right leg. Therefore she is forced to use her left foot to write, turn pages of her textbooks and use the computer.
She started her academic career at the Deraniyagala Halloluwa Junior School, and passed the Grade Five Scholarship Exam with 153 marks, gaining acceptance to the Eheliyagoda National School. In 2018 she passed her O/L’s with 8 As and 1B, then decided to follow the Commerce Stream for A/L’s, choosing to do Accounts, Business Studies and Economics. She received As for all three subjects.
Rashmi’s father, Sarath Gunawardena, teaches at the Eheliyagoda National School and her mother, Dhammika Gunwardena, gave up her teaching career to care for Rashmi and help her with her studies.
Rashmi said she never felt any different to other children because her family and friends always made a point to include her in everything. She said her primary school teacher used to carry her to games so she did not feel left out.
Rashmi is also a skilled singer and won many medals for her musical performances. She also brought pride to her motherland when she won the Super Challenge Gold Medal at the Global Technology Challenge tournament held in Vietnam.
She planned to work in the Human Resource Management sector, and thanked her parents, teachers, friends and Eheliyagoda National School PrincipalHemali M. Rajaguru for supporting her throughout her academic career.
