Govt. campuses encouraged to build UBL to strengthen Start up AHEAD
View(s):State universities have been asked by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to conduct a programme pertaining to the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship for new students during their orientation programme.
From this year onwards, the university system will be encouraged to build University Business Linkages (UBL), UGC Chairman Sampath Amaratunge said.
“Unfortunately we are yet to gain economic benefits from research conducted at universities. Many state universities across the world are partnering with the private sector. It will help encourage and promote research and innovation within universities,” he said.
He also said universities will now get opportunities to obtain funding, work with the private sector and use university resources productively.
The UGC issued a circular recently on attracting commercial partners to strengthen university research and innovation teams and start up AHEAD.
Start up AHEAD is a university staff and student start up policy developed this year to facilitate the commercialisation of inventions developed at universities.
The circular includes instructions on startup registration, payment of compensation for the usage of university IPR and facilities, academic and student involvement in startups etc.
Universities are also encouraged to develop idea hubs and to begin an annual award ceremony to recognise outstanding ideas, successful startups and those promoting innovation.
