The school is attended by over 350 students, the vast majority from families facing severe economic hardship. The shortage of facilities is so severe that students learn in coconut palm thatched huts and condemned buildings earmarked for demolition.
The school’s Grade 6 classes are held in a temporary wooden shed.
Grade 11 classes, as well as the school’s music room and several other classes are situated in a building that is over 100 years old and which has been removed from use by the Education Ministry owing to concerns over student safety. The building is infested with termites and even snakes, students and teachers say. Nevertheless, given no other option, parents have banded together to effect urgent repairs to the building to enable classes to be held despite the dangers.
The music room has no musical instruments while the dancing room has just one drum. One part of the drum is broken so students are taught to dance by tapping the beat on just one side, teachers said.
The school’s toilet facilities too are near collapse.
The school’s Principal has informed education authorities of the lack of facilities at the school and about students having to study in condemned buildings, but is yet to receive a positive response.
