Sri Lanka will not go hungry
Sri Lanka will be able to avert the predicted food shortage in October as authorities are said to have taken the right measures in time by importing sufficient quantities of rice.
“We predicted shortages after October but the government imported 424, 000 MT of rice and another 45, 000 MT is made available under the food aid programme, as a result we will be able to meet the requirement of rice until December this year,” Peradeniya University Senior Crop Science Prof. Buddhi Maramabe told the Business Times on Wednesday.
Proactive measures to avert a possible food shortage as predicted by scientists and agriculturalists has allowed for these predictions to be now pushed away.
With fertiliser supplies likely to come in time for the Maha season, the paddy farmers will be able to record a good season when the harvest comes in from February / March next year.
“If the Maha season works well then we will be in very good shape next year,” Prof. Marambe explained adding that the authorities need to plan right now for the next Yala cultivation and management to ensure food security for the country for all other crops as well.
